Jessica’s Story: Supporting Other Couples through the Pandemic
During lockdown we’ve been in touch with many couples who’s plans to get married have had to change. Today Jessica tells her own wedding story and the fabulous support group she’s created on Facebook to help other couples during this difficult time.
‘We planned our big day since getting engaged in November 2018. The original date was 28th May 2020.
When this virus came out and obviously threatened the wedding we postponed to 31st July 2020. Our venue Rudding park were so helpful in helping us find this date.
Luckily all the suppliers we booked were available for our new date. Unfortunately though we just haven’t been able to get things in place in time for the new date.
Also social distancing may still be around and the wedding is still under threat and may not even take place.
We have lots of guests concerned about their health and some were unable to attend. I am a nurse and have had to rest annual leave and cancel some of it during the busy period we are facing at present. I didn’t get my annual leave in July so I didn’t think I would have the time to enjoy the run up to the wedding.
My partners stag Do was cancelled and other hen do’s I had arranged were also cancelled. Other things such as hair and makeup trials could not go ahead.
Further this this we both don’t have wedding attire. Therefore we decided to postpone to 4th June 2021. Again the venue and suppliers were incredibly understanding and were available for the date. This was a huge disappointment but the sensible option for us.
On top of this we have had to reschedule the honeymoon and get refunds on hotels and flights we had booked. We had been planning a trip to Borneo for a long time and couldn’t wait to go. My house is filled with merchandise personalized for the original date. I have special engraved gifts that cannot be redone.
Bridesmaids outfits are ready and I can only hope they will still fit and be suitable for next year. As a result it’s been a stressful few months doing all this amongst us both working but we have done it together.
I used to be part of many wedding groups on Facebook but during the pandemic, instead of being filled with merchandise and lovely ideas they were full of brides and groom’s in frenzy’s. Posts about cancellations and postponed dates and about the emotional turmoil it was causing. It was chaotic and arguments were circulating. I recognized how I felt when I read them and thought others must feel the same.
As a result I decided to create a wedding support group to allow people to air their concerns without fear of judgement.
This is the link to the support group on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/groups/218409122584056/?ref=share
We have amazing people who share their stories and help one another with ideas. I have also sought legal advice on issues where couples are set to lose money due to services being unavailable.
Further to this I do live videos and chat to members about the emotional side of this. I do this in-between shifts and spend time on my days off researching legal advice for some of the key issues we are coming across on the page.
I love helping people and it’s something that helps me get through my own difficulties. My message is by sharing your journey you can inspire many others.
I can’t wait to get planning again for our wedding day and honeymoon. It’s been a strange year so far but I believe that we shouldn’t let this define our future. We can and we will get married to our soul mates.’
