A Whirlwind engagement and a ghostly encounter from a well-loved relative for Ariarna & James special day.

Ariarna & James live in Chesterfield with their Dog Blue and 2 children Roman and Azora.

The couple have been together for eight years, but originally met on a night out when James was in the navy. ‘He used to pester me a little bit and so I finally decided to go for it’, Ariana said. They waited until James had left the navy before moving in, but then got a house, a dog and 2 children all in a really short time frame.

‘James asked me to marry him on my birthday whilst I was pregnant with our second child. We went for a taster menu to Fischer’s Restaurant. I couldn’t drink at the time but had the odd Guinness; James got a Guinness glass and put my name on it and it said ‘to the future Mrs Green’. Ariarna said.

James then got down on one knee with the ring. Earlier, Ariarna had never clocked onto the engagement as she just thought James was whisking them away on a special evening away, with an overnight stay in one of the restaurant’s chalets. He’d even bought her a Ted Baker gift for the room, so she thought he’d splashed out enough and an engagement definitely wasn’t on the cards. Turns out it was!

The happy couple began planning their special day right away and went to other venues but fell in love with the Peak Edge Hotel. They opted for the late availability package, leaving them just 5 months to plan the whole wedding, including getting the dress.

Three weeks before their original wedding date, Ariarna went dress dropping and really enjoyed it. ‘We went to a few dress shops and my mum’s brutally honest, so was like nope’, at some of the gowns she tried on. They finally went to New York Bride in Eckington, which had lots of sample dresses from a size 6-18. ‘As soon as I saw my size on the rail, I thought I could have every single one of them.’ Ariarna settled on a fishtail style dress, where the top half was beaded blush pink with a deep v at the front and low back, and the fishtail part was white.

Ariarna and James loved the venue before they made all the changes and extensions, because of its location. ‘We have family in Sheffield and its only 5 minutes from Chesterfield town centre, but you wouldn’t think it as you’re surrounded by fields and cows.’ Ariarna said.

They already knew they loved the food as had been several times before. Ariarna mentioned, ‘We wanted to be able to go back somewhere that was close to celebrate anniversaries and take the kids to, and we’d seen photographers use the Peak Edge Hotel a lot to advertise as it’s so picturesque’.

What clinched the Peak Edge for Ariarna and James was the fact they could have their wedding outdoors in the pagoda.

The wedding was originally supposed to be in the April, but then got pushed back 3 times due to the pandemic, with their final date on 11th July 2021. Thankfully this gave the couple more time to sort things out for their big day.

With a newborn baby and two new businesses, Ariarna with her aesthetics business and James with his removals company, the couple left the theme and décor in the hands of one of their bridesmaids, named Forest, who also happened to be a florist. ‘I said to her to just do what she thought was best and gave her a colour scheme of sage, blush, white and a simplistic theme’, Forest did not disappoint, and the theme looked stunning.

Ariarna and James had a lot of things that meant a lot to them that needed to be included in the wedding day. ‘My grandad should have walked me down the aisle as he was like a dad to me, but he sadly passed away.’ Ariarna’s grandad was the president of Chesterfield Golf Club, so in a nod to his memory, Crazy Golf was part of the entertainment for the day.

As the couple had more time to plan things, they added quite a lot on, including their photographer and videographer.

‘I also had to get my dress altered twice as the date kept changing and I kept losing baby weight’, Ariarna remembers.

When the day finally came, the ceremony was held at 12pm and something weird happened.

As my brother walked me down the aisle instead, when doing his speech, he spoke a lot about grandad and what he taught us, including morals and life skills and a lot of other amazing things’, but what happened next couldn’t have been predicted.

As Ariarna’s brother was speaking about all the lovely memories of their grandad, all the lights turned off, including the fire exit lights which are on a separate circuit. Ariarna explained how everyone was in the dark, whether they were believers or non-believers, and there was so much love in the room at that moment. It was like her grandad was letting everyone know he was there. ‘People still talk about it now’, she said.

The guests later sat down to a 3-course meal of pork terrine, chicken with all the trimmings and Bakewell tart for dessert. Ariarna said how their families are quite musical, so a String Quartet played throughout the ceremony and meal.

Their wedding cake was a really simple naked lemon cake and was decorated by their bridesmaid florist.

For their wedding favours, Ariarna and James had small Alice in Wonderland style bottles with tags saying ‘traditional navy tipple: love has no distance’ containing port. This was of key significance as when James was in the navy, he was regularly away for 7-8 months on deployment.

A particularly happy memory for the couple was after their first dance, which led into another song that the couple love and got them through some lonely times during lockdown. ‘After the first dance, the kids appeared, so it was just our family that we all really loved, we loved that moment,’ Ariarna said.

The song was Conversations in the Dark by John Legend if you were wondering.

It also happened to be the Euro finals the day of their wedding, which they couldn’t get away from. So they decided to make it a part of the day and had it on a massive screen which guests loved.

For the evening festivities Ariarna and James had a DJ who had a login for guests to submit their own songs. Everyone got a little of their own genres which was a nice touch.

Ariarna said, ‘I actually sing at weddings and will be singing at Peak Edge for future weddings but wasn’t going to sing at my own’.

Many Congratulations to the happy couple!
