Ideas & Inspiration

Choosing who to have as a bridesmaid can be one of two things; straight forward or tricky depending on family dynamics and friendships.

The last thing any bride wants to do is rock the boat or cause offence by appointing some bridesmaids and leaving others out. It’s a tricky situation so tread very carefully. The most important thing is to choose girls you feel closest to.

If you have life long friends, then these are obvious candidates but equally, if you or the groom have a younger sister or a niece or close cousin, these too are strong possibilities.

Choosing a bridesmaid can be like walking through a minefield but don’t be tempted to appoint too many attendants just for the sake of pleasing everyone.

There’s no real limit on the number of bridesmaids a bride can have – but you need to be sensible from a cost and taste perspective. After all, it is your big day and you don’t want to be overshadowed by a bevy of bridesmaids.

Another factor to decide is whether you want older bridesmaids or younger ones. Remember if you have very young bridesmaids or flower girls, you will need someone older to keep an eye out them as they carry out their duties.

Most brides choose a maid-of-honour which is usually someone they have known for a very long time. She will be your right hand woman and help organise all aspects of the wedding along the planning route.

Older bridesmaids form the bride’s support network and should be on hand to help with any wedding planning issues as they arise. On the day itself, bridesmaids are still there to assist the bride and, as members of the bridal party, should be on hand to welcome and host guests.

Once your attendants are chosen, let the shopping begin; here’s out round up of what’s on trend for the coming season….

Natural & Neutral

Neutrals are a popular colour choice all year round, from off-whites and greys to subtle sages and silvers. Keeping on the metallic theme, sequins and sparkle are up there too, whether you’re looking for winter glam, or summer shimmer.

Perfectly Pastel

Blush, pinks and peaches are still high on the trending list, along with pastels. Popular pale hues includes lilacs, aquas, lemons and blues. Pale powder blue is a big hitter for this year and suits most skin tones and age ranges. We’re also expecting to see a surge of purples again, but forget Cadbury, 2019 is all about Ultra Violet.

Deep and rich

Deep colours are big news, especially when we enter the later months. Look out for blacks, burgundies and navy blues, with velvet making a huge comeback for the cooler months.

Bejewelled

We’re also seeing lots of Jewel tones in the new season’s bridesmaid dresses. So, lots of ruby reds, emerald greens and topaz yellow are expected at many weddings this year, with focus more on block colour, rather than florals or patterned dresses.

Shoulders on show

When it comes to style, it’s all about having your shoulder on display. Opt for a Bardot cut, off shoulder cap sleeve or halter neck, and be sure to watch out for bridesmaid jumpsuits in off the shoulder styles too.
